The Manhattan Project
The Manhattan project was a research and development project that was led by the U.S.A. and supported by Canada and Britain.

Hiroshima: August. 6, 1945.Japan's refusal to surrender prompted the United States to drop an atom bomb on the port city of Hiroshima in Japan. The city was destroyed and 71 000 people were killed immediately.
Japan still didn't surrender... Nagasaki: August. 8, 1945.The United States dropped a second bomb on Japan, this time on Nagasaki. The bomb that hit Nagasaki killed 33 000.
Japan wanting to now end the war, officially surrendered on September. 2, 1945. The total amount of instantaneous deaths apon the explosions from the two bombs reached 106 000 but radiation would kill countless more and leave the land uninhabitable. |
Historical Significance:The atomic bomb ended World War Two and thus concluded Canada's involvement in the conflict. Although the bomb had helped win the war, it was far too dangerous as it would make nuclear war a bigger risk at the sign of any conflict.
Canada had now become a part of a world where nations had the destructive power to wipe each other off the planet. This would be an issue that Canada still has to face in the present day. |
